WASHINGTON D.C. Dred Scott is
property. According to our Supreme Court
and Chief Judge Roger Taney, Scott is no different than a draft horse, a cotton
gin, or a bale of cotton. Although his
owner, Dr. John Emerson, took Mr. Scott and his family (wife Harriett and their
two children) to live in two FREE
states, the law of those states was ignored. Scott and his family remain in chains. Two questions. “How will abolitionists react to this
decision?” The highest court in our Republic
has said black men and women who are slaves remain the property of their owners
NO MATTER WHERE THEY LIVE. The other
question is “Will Southern states now carry out their threat to secede?” Justice Taney has basically handed them the
candy store. Southern slave owners could
lead a parade of their slaves through the streets of Boston, sticking their tongues out at the
abolitionists. But will the
abolitionists whip out their knives and cut off their tongues?
I believe the Supreme Court made the right decision!
ReplyDelete(Joking! go abolitionists!)
the court all down but nine. blacks got feelings to blacks need freedom to. We nobody's property. we have worked our whole lives to just have our young in taken away and our purposes given from God taken away from us. I will not stand for this injustice.
ReplyDeleteI've had enough of these Abolitionist's. They need to lighten up! I used to work on a plantation as an overseer and the work isn't that bad. Slaves aren't people they are property.
ReplyDelete(Abolitionists are right. This needs to end. I did used to work on a plantation as an overseer and the plantation owners do NOT treat 'their' slaves well. Slaves are people not property)
I believe the south will carry out their threat. Because slavery is an accepted practice in the bible and if there is one thing that we will always believe in it is are religion and the government has too much power they can't just ignore a state’s law and use their own laws. Also we shouldn't have one person make a huge decision for the U.S.A (Abraham Lincoln). Yes the north will be happy about the decision what about the whole south. He is pretty much thinking for himself he is being selfish not even thinking of a compromise for every one that disagrees. The north will take over all of the south if we don't fight back.
ReplyDelete
DeleteBoth parties deprecated war; but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive; and the other would accept war rather than let it perish. And the war came.
War came because you could not come up with a compromise that made both parties happy. just sending us food will not settle. If you don't find a compromise that will make both parties happy then war will come.

DeleteThe Supreme Court has the correct choice. The abolitionists need to be ruled out of this whole debate. The southern states will prevail! (Of course this is just a front. I do believe the abolitionists will, "take the cake," so to speak).

ReplyDeleteSlaves are people. They are disrespected, mistreated
ReplyDeleteand abused. To have slaves as a free labor for a man is one thing, but as a property like a pencil, traded around a school is ridiculous. If a slave can be taken to free states and still be property, this whole country is a gruesome nation. Slaves need to be saved from torture! It is my duty as yours a christian to help the needy.
I kno nothing of the supreme court or the arguments over slavery. But I do know that the civil war here is very hard on my town including me and my family. General Johnston fell back across the river on July 19th, 1864, and up to this time we have had but few quiet days. We can hear the canons and muskets very plane, but the shells we dread. One has busted under the dining room which frightened us very much. One passed through the smoke-house and a piece hit the top of the house and fell through but we were at Auntie Markham's, so none of us were hurt. We stay very close in the cellar when they are shelling.
ReplyDeleteSlavery may not be the main reason I enlisted, but it sure was a part of it. I oppose to the concept of slavery. Persons should not be treated as so, or be handled as property.
ReplyDeleteThey deserve to be treated as whites are, not as slaves. I am a strong abolitionist, as my parents raised me as. I have never once thought that slavery was acceptable, and it is not.
DeleteWhat whites don't know is that we are nobody's property. We are all humans we are all on this planet together and treatin eachother harshly wont work. we are the same except for ar skin. i think slaves should be free in both north and south. every day i travel with other blacks tryin to get them freed. we need some were to go to be free. on my jurney if somebody wants to turn bac or quit i wont let um. their is nothin worse than this slavery.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Harriet. After my troops and I were sent to a confederate prison camp in the battle of cold harbor, we all vowed to exact our vengeance by freeing the slaves of america.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Philip Henson I deserve the right to MY slaves! By the way did anyone catch my play "The Apostate" in January 1863? I did an incredible job if I do say so myself.
ReplyDeleteI think slaves are considered property and I believe the Supreme Court has made the right decision. I am a freed slave who's a servant at the White House and I am being treated well.
ReplyDelete(Slaves are not anyone's property. Slave are human and should not be treated unfairly. Being a black women I completely disagree with the Dred Scott decision)
The Supreme Court made the wrong decision. I come from a family who is opposed to slavery and committed to equal rights for both genders. The slaves have done nothing wrong to receive this kind of a punishment. If slaves are freed then, then they are free, they are not "property" to anyone. They should be treated equally, just like a white man.
ReplyDeleteThe Supreme Court has made a very very bad decision. Slaves deserve the right to be a free and live under there own rights! Do these slaves that live in free states deserve the cruel and horrific punishments that their owners give them. Slaves should have equal rights! This needs to end now or someone is going to do something about it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Mr. Brown, I think slaves should be treated with the same respect as everyone else. This is a conflict that I fear can only end in one of two ways: war or peace.
DeleteYes Mr. Brown you are correct the Supreme Court is very wrong. These slaves deserve to be free. We when to their country and just took them like animals blacks are just the same as whites so they should be treated the same!
ReplyDeleteI believe the supreme court made a very bad decision. We blacks are just the same as you whites. I believe knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave. The white man's happiness cannot be bought by the black man's misery. The Supreme Court needs to rethink their decision.

DeleteMost people believe the Supreme Court is correct! ( I also agree with the Supreme Court I disagree with the abolionisits. The animals should continue to do our work.)
ReplyDeleteWhy would you be so low to call people animals? I cant believe you are proud that you make your own people work hours and hours doing your biding. I'm stumped why you even need slaves to do your work. The court is wrong.

ReplyDeleteSlavery should be banned. Nobody should participate in this inhumane practice. (The supreme court has made the correct decision to the best of their ability. These slave-owners have invested money into providing them shelter, food, and water. It's wrong to strip away their source of income and waste all the time the slave-owner put into them. Many of these people rely on slaves to stay alive, so if this was banned you are deliberately killing qualified whites. It's very sensible for Roger Taney to do this; it lets everyone keep their property. Plus, talk to some phrenologists if you want to know why slaves are property. They have revolted consistently killing many innocent whites in the process. They deserve what's coming to them. I stand by Roger Taney on his excellent decision.)

ReplyDeleteThis is one of the best decisions the Supreme court has ever made! White supremacy is the most important thing to fight for. In my books The Lost Cause and The Lost Cause Regained, i show how important this decision was. Blacks are property. Thats final.
ReplyDeleteThe abolitionists are insane! They are causing a dreadful fuss and it needs to stop! My father raised me to be a kind, charitable southern woman, but I'm afraid I can't keep holding my tongue. Slaves are the glue that holds this country together! There is no way we can allow them to run amuck about our country shooting their mouths off about their freedom. (Truthfully, the Dred Scott case was poorly assessed and I fear my trust in our government is faltering. I will continue to support our slaves in their quest for freedom.)
ReplyDeleteSlave owners have rights back to their property. We have bought these things. They have no right to run away. We have provided food and shelter for these animals. If we were to let them go, they would act like animals. We ride the river with them. If they stop making food, we die and they die. they would make society even more shoddy than it is right now.
ReplyDeleteI am rather inclined to silence, and whether that be wise or not, it is at least more unusual nowadays to find a man who can hold his tongue than to find one who cannot.but I will say this a house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved , I do not expect the house to fall ,but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.

ReplyDeleteI think the Supreme Court made an ace-high decision because slaves are and always will be property. As property, it would make sense that being on free soil would not make them free, as they are still owned. As a proud southerner, I support the supreme courts decision completely. ( I think that's complete bosh. Slaves are people, just like everyone else; they should not be considered anyone's property. It makes me furious to know that those southerners force black men and women to work for them and won't even let them be free when they are on free soil. Supreme Court should rethink their terrible decisions. )
ReplyDeletethis is not working
ReplyDeletewhat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletei think the supreme court made a ace-high decision. The whole case was rich, But i think the fellow had game. I mean at the end of the day slaves have to face their master and his probably gave him a boss whipping because he definitely woke the wrong passenger. But that is a boss way of showing how to shoot your mouth off. However beating slaves seems wrong to me. I mean yes slaves are property but they should be treated fairly. Cause they seem like someone to tie up
ReplyDeleteI agree with the Supreme Court! We rely on these animals to work, not be free. This should not even be a question. Abolitionists should never be able to speak. These animals do our work for us so that we don't have to do it ourselves. Supreme Court is definently right!! Abolitionists should not have a say in this world and if they do they should be punished.
ReplyDeleteThe Supreme Court made a very ace-high decision. The abolitionists are wrong. (I don't agree with any one this. I don't want anyone arranging my marriage for me. I don't even want to get married in the first place. I just want to go out and have an adventure. Dred Scott is not property and should be let go.)
ReplyDeleteWhile I disagree with slavery and believe that Dred Scott should be set free, I strongly feel that violence is never the way to solve conflict. This brings me to understand the courts decision. Knowing that the South would not have thrown in the sponge if Dred Scott had been considered free, this could have led to the start of a war and result in the deaths of many people in both the North and the South. Since the abolitionists have yet to act violently towards the South, my hope is that a move like this will avoid the costliness of a war. If bloodshed is what the South wants, we as abolitionists, should beat the devil around the stump.
ReplyDeleteThe supreme court shouldn't treat Dred Scott like a "draft horse, a cotton gin, or bale of cotton" Scott is not an item he is a person with a family and should have the same right as any white man with a family.
ReplyDeleteWhite people think we arnt people. white people think we dont have feelings. Us blacks are people not animals! i disagree with the supreme court dred should be set free as well as the rest of his family
ReplyDeleteThe south is likely making empty threats to no more than further their cause and influence. Do not listen to such rabble! And for the Supreme Court to decree that even in these free lands slaves are no more human than the furniture they provide maintenance to is simply in humane and disrespectful to our ways here in the north!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe these southerners talking about how slaves are worth no more than furniture! My job is to free the slaves and I intend to do so with my power.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't effect me and my family. I don't really care about slavery to be quite honest it doesn't effect me and my family so I just turn a blind eye to it. The only people i really care about in this world is my family. What I can say is there's a war brewing abolitionists are getting angry. The south's getting frustrated. Its not looking good. I just hope I can protect my family.
ReplyDeletethe supreme court has made a ace-high decison. he deserves to be working for us not with us. He is worth nothing more than an animal. the abolitionists are not right and will never be correct. ( this is bosh, slaves are people and Dred Scott deserves to be free he is just the same as a white man but the color of his skin. I just want to go back to the north soon.)
