Editorial #2 JOHN BROWN: HERO OR VILLIAN?

HARPER'S FERRY, VIRGINIA. Last week on October 16th, John Brown and several of his followers raided the federal weapons storage depot at the Harper's Ferry Arsenal in Virginia. The raid, which some have characterized as "heroic" and others as "an outrage" has served one purpose. It has raised the tensions between those states that support slavery and those who do not. This paper, which has often questioned the practice of slavery in the past, does NOT support, and never will support the use of violence to solve what is really a political problem. Brown has shown his true colors.  He made Kansas “bloody” with his raids on innocent settlers.  And now he has raided a FEDRAL ARMS DEPOT. John Brown should be punished, and his exploits should be denounced by President Lincoln. It is the only way to return to the compromise solutions that have worked for us in the past. Throw John Brown in jail where he can do no more harm.

  1. Good riddance. If Lincolns smart he will do the what he should and end that sadistic mad man before he gets out and does something even worse and hurts people.

  2. Brown needs to go to jail. Raiding innocent settlers is not a good way to prove your point. He is practically starting a war here!

Slavery runs our country and what would people do without it? Can you imagine putting white men and women to do the work that slaves do now?
(Slavery is an issue in this country and needs to end. Slaves are people too! They need their rights as people instead of some plantation owners property.)

  5. Violence has been the belief of the south. Southerners torture slaves with violence. Now northerners use violence against the south. Both are awry and bad. Violence is not the answer, it's just supporting the south. Certainly throw Brown in the calaboose and every slave owner with him.

  7. John brown is a hero. Violence isn't always the solution but for rebeling for the right thing it is, violence is the only way that can show the south that slavery is wrong.

  8. What John Brown did was an outrage. He might be a curly wolf, but that doesn't mean that raid the federal weapons storage depot. To prove our point we need to show the southerners that slavery is a very very cruel thing. Using violence is bosh. John Brown should be put in to the calaboose for doing for his unacceptable behavior.

    1. I agree. Though we all need to prove our Point to the darn southerners. He's causing a fuss bout slavery which is the only thing I'm proud he done. But that last thing we need is the anti slavery movement up the spout. Stealing is not gonna improve how whites think of slaves and our supporters. Its gonna make um think that slaves need more control and more punishment or else they will rise up taking more whites with um to do something awful. But all we want is freedom and we want to try to be peaceful bout it and we will not through I the towel.

    2. You slaves have no idea what you are getting into! You claim you want peace and freedom- thats bosh! You are just asking for violence! Give in to the slave owners, they are more powerful and have more money. Don't turn our growing country into a bleeding nation! (My opinion is that the slaves need to calm down and contain themselves, but at least the idea of freedom is popular among them. Slaves are people, not property!)

  9. I look up to john brown i think what he did is great and I hope this will open Abraham Lincoln's eyes. Because this will keep on happening if Abraham Lincoln does not come up with a compromise for this whole slavery fiasco.

  10. All of you must be wondering why I would do this. I did this simply because even with all the compromises like the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850, none of the problems helped solve the issue with slavery. Nothing was going to happen with PEACE. Blood needed to be shed in order for things to start to change. I'm proud of what I've done and will continue to do this in-order to gives the slaves the rights they deserve. Throw me in a caloboose if you like, I will never give up the fight to end slavery.

  13. John Brown should be punished! This is a shoddy way to express his feelings about whats right and wrong. This does nothing except put us on the brink of a civil war! Jail will do grand for John Brown. I still cannot believe this outragous act happened. He can read my books in jail and start to understand what he really did.

  15. Abe Lincoln must do something. If his goal as a president is to keep the Union together then he must stick with his word. After all that is why people voted for him. What was John Brown trying to accomplish? Abe needs to stick to his word. After all he is Honest Abe.

  16. I think that he should be throw in jail. He should have put on his bib and tucker and settled it in court or politics. I've gone through the mill and killing people is no way to make twig. It might of helped a heap if you had used your words. John had all down but nine, big time. I respect a curly wolf but that is going to far. If you ask me he was probably soaked to some bosh and shoddy like that.

  17. How dare you try and take over you darn abolitionists. Slaves should not have the right to have power in this world! None of you have the right to perform violence. Slaves should not be free at all. Never in life, they aren't human they are our property! I am so outraged that this has happened! All abolitionists who participated in this event should be put to jail for what they have done. A true american should appreciate that we don't have to work at all in our lives because our work gets done for us, everyday!

  18. John Brown should be punished an should be sent to jail. (I think it's an outrage. No one should have the right to perform violence. But at the same time slaves are not property everyone should be free and the abolitionists have no right to be violent. Everyone deserves adventure like I want to go on an adventure. I have arrived in Michigan and if you're a slave or not you should have the right to be free. No violence should be allowed from anyone.)

  19. All that John Brown is doing is being a fuss. Violence will never solve anything. Slaves are property and they shouldn't be able to have the same rights as us anyways. This went too far. He better be headin' to calaboose or he's gonna make us southerners angrier than we already are.
(I will not say that John Brown's method of using violence was the best way. But, I do think that instead of staying at home while drinkin' a cup of arbuckles and waiting for the government to make a decision, it is necessary to step up and do something if we want change. While working as a northern spy and blending into the southerners, I've seen the many horrible ways slaves are treated. Although his use of violence was not right, I believe the intentions of his actions to end slavery were for the good.)

  20. John Brown is a criminal. Brown's raids are a fuss to everybody in town. His acts are only making things harder for him and pushing America further away from abolishing slavery. He should be sent to the calaboose!
(John Brown is a hero for fighting for justice and I support him in what he does. White people are not any better than us blacks, we are human too and deserve human rights.)

  21. During my rehearsal for a play I decided to join a group called the Richmond Grays. The Richmond Grays are a militia and our numbers are around 1,300 men who are all going to the execution of John Brown. Together we will make sure no Abolitionists will try to free there friend from his inevitable doom. Although he wasn't a man I was friends with I admire how he impassively faced his execution.

  22. When John Brown first went on his raids I was the superintendent of West Point New York. However it so happened while I was on an extended vacation visiting family in Arlington Virginia that John Brown and his band decided to raid the U.S arsenal and Armory at Harpers Ferry [now West Virginia]. I could not allow this to happen so close to home. So I was placed in command of a detachment of marines along with Second Lieutenant J.E.B. Stuart. Together in october 1859 we captured Brown and his band.

  23. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause.therfore I believe that John brown shall pay for what he has done.

  24. There will be consequences John Brown for your actions.

  25. I agree with what John Brown did. Nothing we have tried in the past has solved the problems with slavery. You can't just say we should've done something less violent when nothing else was been working. Slavery is way to big of a problem to just ignore. John Brown took matters into his own hands and did what he needed to do.

  26. Although I believe that slavery is wrong, I disagree with how John Brown handled the situation. Instead of making a violent fuss, he should have found a way to act powerfully and peacefully. However, John Brown should not be thrown in the calaboose, he made a shoddy decision about how to act on his beliefs and should be reminded how to protest without cruelty. The Confederates will most definitely not back down and find their revenge in violence and gore. I am at sea with those who think that war will solve our issues, it is bosh that we cannot find a civil way to come to sensibility! We must not give in to the brutality of a war, or we will go through the mill and learn that we are risking the lives of both the North and South.

  27. Finally a serious abolitionist. I'm glad that a sensible person is finally taking control of this. We really need to rally up all the other unionists and follow suit. Protect John Brown from furious confederates and we can help the oppressed slaves even more!(This is a barbaric act of selfishness. I have never witnessed such a uncivilized crime against the US. Jail this outlaw immediately and make sure no one else ever comes close to doing a deed such as this ever again. We really need to summon more strength to fight these abolitionists.

  28. Although I do understand the frustration of John brown I don't agree with his psychotic ways! Any man should understand that you should never bring violence into an argument when it's not needed. I just hope this doesn't cause too much of an outrage.

  29. john brown did what was needed to be done all of the compromises that were made did not solve the problem of slavery. John Brown took action and was as some say "heroic"

  31. Though I would prefer that he had attempted to get his point across in a less violent and vulgar manner, I salute John Brown and his cause as a renegade vigilante fighting against the tyrants that are the slave owners!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Violence is not the way to solve everything. I, myself would not have gone and done the things that Brown has commited. But perhaps it had to be done. Perhaps the only way to fix this issue was war. I'm not saying I agree with this, but this situation has to stop. Our country has split itself! We cannot go on like this forever. Violence may as well be our only option.

  33. I tell everybody here that John Brown is a monster. His cause is not just, and his methods are extremely violent. This man must be stopped by any means necessary. (I completely believe in John Brown's cause. I knew that blood would eventually be spilled.)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think what John did was dandy. We will then be pretty much unstoppable against the people who support the slaves. Blacks are just like whites so I don't understand why we treat them terribly. Once we start to show that blacks are like whites we will then be able to free other slave states! Yall need to start agreeing on freeing the enslaved states and start agreeing with John Brown. Whatever is necessary to fight against the states that support slavery, then I believe that that is the right thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  35. John Brown is just a crazy man.Why would he want to hurt innocent settlers? They've got nothing to do with slavery. What is even trying to accomplish with this craziness? Somebody needs to stop him before he does some serious damage to this nation and starts a war. John brown is insane villain who needs to be put in jail or in the ground doesn't matter.

    ReplyDelete
  36. There shouldn't have even been the need for guns. violence is not the solution, all violence does is build up and and tension and thats the last thing we need right now.

  37. another bosh move by the north. John Brown shall be thrown an a calaboose. violence is not always the answer but we all know abolitionists are not the answer. These abolitionists always causing trouble. That man is a monster and he better scadaddle because he just woke up the wrong passenger. ( although i am against slavery, john brown should not have done this. This is just gonna start bloody violence and that's not what we need right now.)
